재여부재(材與不材)

재여부재(材與不材) - 재목으로 쓸모 있는 것과 쓸모없음, 사람의 재능을 비유

이쪽으로 보나 저쪽으로 보나 아름다운 八方美人(팔방미인)은 용모뿐 아니라 여러 방면에 능통한 사람을 일컫는 말이기도 하다. 하지만 여러 곳을 손대다 보니 모두 깊이 있게 잘 할 수는 없어 반거충이라 놀릴 때도 쓴다. 사람의 능력은 정해져 있어 어느 한 분야에 정통한 전문가라도 다른 일엔 젬병인 경우가 허다하다.
 
재주가 없다고 자조할 필요도 없는 것이 사람은 모두 한 가지는 쓸모 있는 분야가 있다. ‘굽은 나무가 선산을 지킨다’는 속담대로 천대받던 것이 큰 구실을 할 수도 있기 때문이다. 莊子(장자)가 말한 재목이 될 수 있는 나무와(材與) 아무런 쓸모없는 나무(不材)도 사람의 재능에 절묘하게 비유했다.
 
중국의 諸子百家(제자백가) 중 道家(도가)의 대표인 莊周(장주)의 사상서 ‘장자’에는 동식물이나 옛이야기로 풍자와 교훈을 전하는 寓言(우언)이 넘친다. 이 책의 山木(산목)편에는 장자와 제자들이 강과 숲을 자유롭게 돌아다니며 깊이 있는 대화를 나눈다.
 
산속을 가다가 거대한 나무를 보았는데 벌목하러 온 사람이 손을 대지 않자 그 이유를 물었다. ‘쓸모가 없습니다(無所可用/ 무소가용)’고 대답하니 장자가 제자들에 덧붙인다. ‘이 나무는 재목이 못 되기 때문에 천수를 다할 수 있는구나(此木以不材 得終其天年/ 차목이부재 득종기천년).’ 일행이 산에서 내려가 옛 친구 집을 찾았을 때 정반대의 경우를 본다.
 
친구가 반가워하며 거위를 잡으라고 심부름하는 총각에게 시켰다. 잘 우는 놈과 울지 못하는 놈 중 어느 쪽을 잡을까 하니 ‘잘 울지 못하는 놈을 잡아라(殺不能鳴者/ 살불능명자)’고 한다. 다음날 제자가 장자에게 산속의 나무는 재목이 못되어 오래 살고 주인집 거위는 ‘재목이 되지 못해 죽었으니(以不材死/ 이부재사)’ 앞으로 처신을 어떻게 할지 여쭈었다. 장자가 답한다.
 
‘나는 쓸모 있는 것과 쓸모없는 것 사이에 있으려고 한다(周將處乎 材與不材之間/ 주장처호 재여부재지간).’ 재목과 재목이 못되는 중간은 그럴듯하면서도 실은 아니라며 양쪽으로 얽히지 않고 자연의 이치에 따른다면 속박에서 벗어날 수 있다고 덧붙인다.
 
쓸모 있는 것과 쓸모없는 것의 중간에 장자처럼 있을 수 있을까. 쓸모가 없어서 살아나고, 쓸모가 없어서 폐기처분되는 것을 보면 어느 쪽이든 한쪽으로만 집착할 때 화를 당한다. 이것 아니면 저것이라는 이분법에 갇혀 다양한 변수를 생각하지 못하면 다른 가능성은 꿈도 못 꾼다. 그러니 이렇게 생각할 수 있다. 누구든 전혀 쓸모없는 사람은 없다. 그 분야를 찾는데 시간이 걸릴 뿐이다. 한 분야에 특출한 능력을 보일 수 있다. 그러나 자만하면 다를 사람이 치고 올라와 별 볼일 없이 내리막길만 기다린다. 재능에 초연한 것이 중간인 셈이다.

재여부재(材與不材) - Useful and useless as lumber, a metaphor for a person's talent

A beautiful person who is beautiful from all sides is not only good-looking but also a person who is skilled in many areas. However, because they touch many areas, they cannot do everything well, so they are sometimes called a half-widow when making fun of them. A person's ability is fixed, so even if they are an expert in one area, there are many cases where they are poor at other things.

There is no need to mock yourself for not being talented, because everyone is useful in one area. As the proverb goes, "A crooked tree protects a mountain," something that was looked down on can serve a big purpose.  The trees that can be used as lumber (材與) and the useless trees (不材) that Zhuangzi spoke of are exquisite metaphors of human talent. 

The Zhuangzi, a book of thought by Zhuang Zhou, a representative of Taoism among the Hundred Schools of Thought in China, is full of allegories that convey satire and lessons using plants, animals, and old stories. In the Mountain and Tree section of this book, Zhuangzi and his disciples freely wander through rivers and forests and have deep conversations. 

While walking through the mountains, he saw a huge tree, but when a person who had come to cut it down did not touch it, he asked why. When he answered, “It is useless (無所可用/ 무소가용),” Zhuangzi added to his disciples.  ‘This tree is not good for lumber, so it can live a long life (此木以不材 得終其天年/ 차목이부재 득종기천년).’ When the group went down from the mountain and visited the house of an old friend, they saw the exact opposite case.

The friend was delighted and ordered the young man to catch a goose. He asked which one to catch, the one that cries well or the one that doesn’t, and the young man said, ‘Catch the one that doesn’t cry well (殺不能鳴者/ 살불능명자)’. The next day, the disciple asked Zhangzi how he should behave in the future, since the trees in the mountain are not good for lumber and live long, and the goose in the master’s house ‘died because it wasn’t good for lumber (以不材死/ 이부재사)’. Zhangzi answered.

 ‘I try to be between useful and useless (周將處乎 材與不材之間/ 주장처호 재여부재지간).’ He adds that the middle ground between useful and useless is plausible but not actually true, and that if you don’t get entangled in either direction and follow the laws of nature, you can escape from bondage. 

Can you be in the middle of useful and useless like Zhuangzi? When you see that people survive because they are useless and get discarded because they are useless, you will be in trouble if you are fixated on only one side. If you are stuck in the dichotomy of this or that and don’t think about various variables, you can’t even dream of other possibilities. So you can think like this. No one is completely useless. It just takes time to find that field. You can show exceptional ability in one field. However, if you are proud, someone else will come up and you will just wait for a downhill slope without doing much. Being indifferent to talent is the middle ground.  / Provided by: Ahn Byeong-hwa (former journalist, Korean Language and Literature Society)
